Nie należę do kinomaniaków, ale wyłapywanie interesujących piosenek z filmów czy seriali jest dla mnie jednym z najlepszych sposobów na poznawanie nowych artystów. Zwiastun głośnego w ostatnich dniach filmu „Joker” przyniósł mi kolejny numer, od którego ciężko mi się uwolnić.
W historii komika, który nie radzi sobie z życiem, co popycha go do popełniania zbrodni, ważną rolę odgrywa kompozycja zatytułowana „Smile”. Jej historia sięga 1936 roku. Wówczas instrumentalna wersja utworu wykorzystana została w filmie „Modern Times” Charliego Chaplina. Niecałe dwadzieścia lat później John Turner i Geoffrey Parsons opracowali tekst. Cover, który w 2019 roku odbił się szerokim echem po świecie, nagrany został przez Jimmy’ego Duranta w 1965 roku. Utrzymana w duchu tradycyjnego popu typowego dla lat 60. kompozycja w kontekście filmowej historii bardzo intryguje mnie swoją warstwą tekstową, z której płynie jeden wniosek – śmiech jest najlepszym lekarstwem.
„Smile” nagrane zostało przez Jimmy’ego Duranta na potrzeby albumu „Hello Young Lovers”. Nie jest jedynym coverem, który zamieszczony został na tym krążku. Artysta zmierzył się także między innymi z „Try a Little Tenderness” i „You Can’t Have Everything”.
