13 grudnia 2013 roku czas na chwilę się zatrzymał. Bez zapowiedzi swój nowy, pierwszy od 2011 roku album wydała sama Beyonce. Imienna płyta zrobiła ogromną furorę i miała niemały wpływ na muzyczny biznes. Dziś wspominam kompozycję, która oddziałuje na mnie jeszcze mocniej niż przed sześcioma laty.
Tym numerem jest „***Flawless” – utrzymany w trapowej konwencji numer, który uchodzić już może za nowoczesny feministyczny hymn. Jego ogromnym atutem jest wykorzystanie kapitalnej, pozbawionej kontrowersyjnych tez przemowy aktywistki i pisarki Chimamandy Ngozi Adichie. Jej spokojne słowa kontrastują z agresywnie wyśpiewywanymi (ta chrypka w głosie!) przez Knowles słowami bow down bitches.
Pierwsze podejście do numeru „***Flawless” Beyonce zrobiła kilka miesięcy wcześniej wypuszczając nagranie „Bow Down / I Been On”, które nie zrobiło jednak furory. Nowa wersja dotarła do 41. miejsca na amerykańskiej liście przebojów. Kilka miesięcy później Knowles zaprezentowała remix utworu, w którym swoje trzy grosze wtrąca Nicki Minaj.
